From McGarvey, J.W., Sermons delivered in Louisville, Kentucky (Cincinnati: Standard Publishing Company, no date), first published 1894. A sermon delivered by J.W. McGarvey at the Broadway Christian Church, Lexington, KY, 11 June 1893. J.W. (John William) McGarvey (1829-1911) was one of the leading ministers and religious educators of the American Restoration Movement.
McGarvey begins with an examination of the definition of faith given in Hebrews 1:1, arguing what it does and does not say about the relation of faith to evidence and resulting actions. He then supports his conclusions through an application to the first four examples of faith: Abel, Enoch, Noah, and Abraham.
